Progression Unit:
There are several different forms of art and design that I enjoy, and would love to study further in higher eductation. I find it hard to be specific and pick just one art form to specialise in since I love creating in so many different ways. I've toyed with the idea of being a carpenter, animator, fine artist, photographer, tattoo artist, graphic designer, fashion designer, and many, many, others over the years.
Recently, I feel I have been able to narrow it down and I feel tattooing is what I really want to do. Ive always been interested in it, and I want tattoos myself. I love the different styles there are, from traditional to realism. I think tattooing would give me plenty of scope to try different styles and see what works for me. It would also mean I could still be a practicing fine artist, and even sell paintings and drawings as a second job, and if I really wanted, I could make clothes and jewellery as well, as and when I have the time. And, since it would be in my spare time as my own 'business', I could decided what I make and when.
I have thought about what I want to do, and what I enjoy, but I haven't thought about where would be best for me to study in depth. I have a few Universities in mind, and theres one in particular that I love the look of, but I haven't looked at my other options in depth to know if I'm making the right choices for me.

Glasgow School of Art
Glasgow School of Art offers a tonne of different courses, and has many opportunites. The course that interests me the most from here is their Painting & Printmaking undergraduate course. This interests me the most out of the other courses because I really enjoy painting, and I love the differnet types of printmaking you can get. I feel this course could benifit me the most for the future as well, and I feel it would be really enjoyable.
The entry requirements for this course are:
- Scottish Highers: ABBB in related subjects, included a literate subject (language such as English and French, social subjects, social sciences, etc)
- A strong E-portfolio
- A strong understanding of art and design
- A wide range of different styles and techniques
- A strong personal Statement
I feel this school could be really good for me. However, I do feel that since the course is mainly focusing on just a few mediums, that im worried I might struggle with ideas that are within the limits of the course. I do like the look of the course, and it is along the lines of what I'm looking to do, I just don't wawnt to lose the freedom of creating with no limits.

Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD)
Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design offers many of courses, and was named the top art school in Scotland back in 2019. I have looked at several courses here, and I think this school could be good for me since it is local. meaning I would spend less on travel, it's got brilliant reviews, and the courses look good.
The course that has interested me the most is the undergraduate Fine Arts course. This is because there is a wide range of options this course provides, and its I like how open the course is. I have been to several degree shows at DJCAD, and each time I have gone to see the Fine Arts section and been amazed every time by the range in creativity and talent, and I feel it could be really benificial for me.
The entry requirements for this course are:
- Scottish Advanced Highers: BB, Scottish Highers: BB, in related subjects, included an appropriate literate subject.
- A strong E-portfolio
- A strong understanding of art and design
- A strong personal statement
- A wide range of different skills and techniques
I feel this course could be really good for me, and that I could learn a lot from it. However, I dont have any advanced highers. I do think that the HND contemporary art and design course I will be sitting next year will cancel out the fact that I dont have advanced highers, but I'm not sure.
I do love the look of this course, and at some point I do wish to sit it. I just dont think I would be able to get in aftet my HND, but you never know.
As a backup from this school, I have also looked at the entry requirements for the undergraduate General Foundation course, and I feel that with the requirements being less strict I may have a better chance of getting in, over the Fine Arts course.
The entry requirements for this course are:
- Scottish Highers: BBBB
- A strong E-portfolio
- A strong understanding of art and design
- A strong personal statement
- A wide range of different skills and techniques
I feel this course would be benificial for me since It offers a wide range of oppotunities and skills to learn. The course allows you to try Jewellery making, Animation, Fine Art, Printmaking, Illustration, Textiles, Graphic Design, and Art Philosophy. I think with how much this course offers, it could really help me decide what I want to do with my art career, I have a vague idea at the moment, but with this course, my opinion might change and I might find something that I'm really good at and just didn't know.

Potential Employment Within the Creative Sector:
I have thought a lot about what I want to do with my life, and what I want to do career wise. I know I definitley want to do something creative, and that I don't want to work a desk job for the rest of my life. My main problem with trying to narrow down what I want to do is that I want to do so much, but I can only specialise in one thing. I love the idea of doing textiles, and being a fashion designer, but I also love the idea of carpentry and tattooing. All of these require completely different skills, and a lot of time and effort to be put into them.
The routes I have thought about taking with my future career are a potential tattoo aprenticeship, and being a freelance artist (self employed).
I have looked into how to get an aprenticeship but with pandemic and how small most tatoo studios are, I'm not able to get one at the moment. the art studios I have contacted have suggested that I stick with my art, and get more practice with drawing commonly asked for designs such as skulls, floral designs and snakes.
With being a freelance artist, I have a vague idea of where to start but I have no idea how I would go aroud getting some work while being freelance.
