For my Album Sleeve Project, I used Badflower as my inspiration. This is because they're my favourite band and I love the music they create.
For some of my ideas, I used the lead singer, Josh Katz, as my subject and painting him/around him. I also did a lot of photography for this project, mainly around the grunge/alternative aesthetics, and flowers. This is because Badflower have flower in their name, obviously, and their music kind of falls into the Alternative catagory.

Out of all of the photos I took with my sister (around 40 photos), I only used seven of them for the project. The photos I have chosen to use are the photos I liked the best, and the photos I thought would work best for the project. I chose the photos I felt really fit the criteria and theme I had set for myself.

Above are some really basic concept sketches, and a basic design to see if I liked the idea.
This was just to help me generate ideas.

[ORIGNAL PIECES BEFORE TAKING REFERENCE PHOTOS]
IMAGE 1:
For this design, I wanted to keep it simple. To fit the band name, I painting the subject in cool colours because they are typically linked with sadness, and negative emotions. To contrast with the cool colours, I made the background warm colours, just to help make the subject stand out more and make it the focal point. I then added light orange, doodle, flowers into the background, and outlined them with a gold paint pen because I felt it was missing something. I feel adding this filled the piece more, helped tie it into the band name more, and it compliments the background really well.
I really like this design because its kind of simple, but is created to a high standard.
IMAGE 2:
With this design i decided I was going to keep it really simple. So, I decided I was going to do a coloured pencil portrait. I used blues and purples, and added in a little bit of yellow for highlights. I then decided to paint the background with more purple colours so that it would compliment the portrait, but not distract from it. I then found this blue and green floral fabric that I felt really fit with the colour scheme. I then decided to cut it into a strip and line of the eyes on the portrait, and sew orange buttons to the fabric where the eyes should be. I chose orange so that it would contrast with the cool colours chosen for the rest of the piece, and draw your attention straight to the face. I only glued the ends of the fabric to the piece so you can move it slightly and still see the hard work underneath. I was also inspired to use the fabric over the eyes, because of Badflowers "OK, I'M SICK" album.
I really love this piece. During the whole process of it, I wasn't liking how it looked or even enjoying it, but seeing the finished result I love it.
IMAGE 3:
For this design I decided I was going to create a piece around the lyrics of one of Badflowers songs, 'Daddy'. I chose the lyrics "she hides in the smile she wears on her face", because I felt I could create a great piece from it. My idea was to draw a woman crying, and have it look like the smile has been carved into her face. I found it difficult to make it look like the smile was carves with the alcohol based markers I used for the piece, so instead I made it look like it was painted on. I wanted it to look carved, so that it would look like she was being forced to put on a happy face, but then with changing it to look like its been painting on I now feel it looks like she is trying to keep up appearances. I feel this makes for a stronger piece. I wanted the smile to be the only thing to really stand out which is why its the only part of the portrait that's in colour.
I really like this piece, and I love concept.

[Development Pieces/Final Ideas]
With these pieces, I decided to do them digitally. This was so that if there were any mistakes, or changes I wanted to make, it would be easier for me to edit the pieces.
IMAGE ONE:
For this piece I was just changed the colours to black and white and added song lyrics from the song 'Let the Band Play' by Badflower. It did take me a hot minute to decide on lettering and placement, and to decide on sticking with the black and white. I knew I wanted to edit the pieces as development to help me get started, I just didn't know how I was going to start by doing it. I do like how this piece turned out, and I'm happy with the lettering I decided on.
I think this piece works really well as development, and I think it was a good start.
IMAGE TWO:
Sticking with the same original piece, I decided I would take it a little further with editing. I found this nice floral fabric in my room, and took a photo of it. I then changed the colours ever so slightly to make it more pink, and really bring out the red tones to back the fabric. On the fabric, just to help it stand out, I turned the saturation up and made the yellow colours stand out a bit more, just so it would compliment with the other layer but not get lost. I decided I was going to cut the portrait out completely just to use the silhouette. I then changed the title at the top to make it more precise, and keep it nice and neat. I then changed the lettering from black, to a nice dark blue so that it would contrast with the warm colours, and not look as harsh on top of the soft colours.
I'm happy with this piece, and the way it turned out, although it's not my favourite. I like it, I just don' love it. Its good, but it's not great.
IMAGE THREE:
With this piece I didnt want to drastically change it since I just loved the original piece so much. So, I decided to invert the colours (after a lot of playing around and trying to decide what changes should be made), and I added an orange outline all around the portrait. I also changed the font of the title at the top, But tried to keep the placement the same.
I'm not happy with the lettering on this piece, not when I look back anyways. I do like it when its inverted, and I feel the colours are more harsh than the original and I think that's what makes it work in a way. I do like this piece overall, I just think it's a bit basic compared to what I could have done.
IMAGE FOUR:
For this piece I decided I would manipulate the image ever so slightly because I wasn't happy with the proportions of the original sketch, so I just fixed them. I then edited the colours, saturation and contrast just a bit until I was happy. I also added a layer of one of the floral fabrics I have, and turned the opacity right down so you can barely see it. I also changed the title at the top of the design completely and moved the position of it as well. I liked the green, for the colours, but I just wasn't happy with it.
This piece was basically just me fixing all the problems I found with the original and making it more like how I had envisioned.
I am happy with how it looks now, and I think it all works really well and makes for a good Album cover.
IMAGE FIVE:
For this design I decided I would use one of the reference photos I took. I just played about with the different ways I could edit the image, and was just having fun with this piece. I changed the colour saturation, hues and contrast. I tweaked the positioning ever so slightly to make the focal point the rose. I then found this glitch effect I could use, and I kind of went a bit mental with it. There was also a glitch, offset I could do where you pick the directions of the different, main, colours and how far from the original image you want them to go. I then took the lyrics from my favourite Badflower song, 'Ghost', and put that over the top of the image. I turned the opacity right down so you can still see the words, but its not over powering. I then added the band title in. Since there was this green line going right through the image from the glitch effect, I put 'Sadflower' over the top, just slightly off so it would all tie in as one whole image.
I am really happy with how this piece turned out and I'm in love with it. I think it all looks really well, and all the colours work well together.
IMAGE SIX:
For this piece I used the same reference photo as before, just I cut the flower out, and edited the layer. I changed the hues and contrast to make it much more red, and darker. I then made the background black, and centred the flower. I struggled with the positioning of the band title, and the font I was going to use. I'm still not sure I like where I placed it. The colour I picked for the lettering was to compliment the main colour of the rose. I wish I didn't need the band name, because I sort of feel like it ruins the piece ever so slightly. For the background I decided to put the lyrics from the song "Let the Band Play" by Badflower. I used the lyrics 3 times to cover the entire background exactly how I wanted. With the lyrics, at first I thought it would look nice if I hand wrote them, but I got about halfway through (twice), and decided it looked janky and it didn't fit. So, I decided to pick a very basic font and copy the lyrics over.
I'm quite conflicted with this piece. I kind of like it, but hate the band name being a part of it, and I feel there's something missing but I can't figure it out. I tried giving the flower a white outline, but I felt it looked stupid. I'm not sure how to make the piece better, but I think its a nice idea.
IMAGE SEVEN:
With this piece I decided I would use two of the reference photos I took. I used one of me stood under graffiti that says "HIGH ANXIETY". I then highlighted those words, and used the soft airbrush tool to add the words "nothing to hide" above my head. These words are actually lyrics from the song "Daddy" by Badflower. I used the airbrush tool to try and make it look like it had been spray painted on, then I turned the opacity down so that it wouldn't be too harsh and it would blend in with the piece. I then used another photo of flowers in a milk bath (yes, I did that), and I turned the opacity right down so that it would only really be visible in the sky of the painting. I didn't want to just take the sky out and swap it for that image, because I feel it would just look too mismatched. For the band name, I just went simple. I make it quite small at the top of the piece, and then I added little corners on it just to add that little bit more to it and not keep it so basic. I also drew a little crown above my head, because I am in fact royalty, and I thought it would look nice.
Overall, I really like this piece, and not just because I'm in it. I think It turned out really well.
IMAGE EIGHT:
For this design, I wanted to keep it simple while still trying to convey sadness, so that it would fit with the band name. I decided I would edit the photo to make the cool colours more prominent, since cool colours, blues mainly, tend to represent sadness. I then cut myself out of the image, and I used another photo of one of the floral fabrics I have to fill in the space. I felt like the floral design was getting lost within the image, and you couldn't see my silhouette, so I outlined where I used to be in white so it would stand out more. For the band name, I picked the prettiest font I could find, and made it just an outline, and put it up in the left corner. This is because I wanted it to look nice and delicate with the whole piece.
I like how this one turned out, but I don't think its the best one for an album cover.
IMAGE NINE:
This design is my favourite out of them all. I love this one so much and I think it all worked out so well. The reference photo I used was a photo I took of my sister holding a rose up to the camera. I absolutely love the original image, and composition, just as much as I love the edited version.
I asked my sister to hold the rose up, in front of her face because I wanted the rose to cover her entire face. I think with the lighting, and all the colours, it makes the image seem quite intimate and sad in a way. I feel this fit the description to a T. It falls into the alternative aesthetic, it seems quite sad, flowers were involved, and no images were stolen.
For the album cover, I edited the photo to make it darker, and bring the reds more forward. I then added a perspective blur so that the only focus would be the rose. For the band name, I just picked the font that fit with the aesthetic I was going for. I cant remember the name of the font, but I really like it and think it works really well.
I do love this design so much, I would say that my only downfall on it is that I relied a lot on editing the photos, and there's no traditional element to it. I took a photo and changed it up, I didn't physically make anything for it. Overall though, I think its still a great piece.
IMAGE TEN:
For this design I decided I was going to take the reference photo of the small fire exit door, cut the door out, and fill it with a piece I did where I made my own stamp that says "You can paint over me but I will still be here :)". This is because it means that no matter what you do, if you cover up an old piece of art, or if you re-recorded your music, or whatever it is you do, the old version, the original, is still there in some way. It could be there in memory, or it could physically be there and you just need to take a few layers off to get there. I then made a new layer where I doodled flowers all over it, then put it over the layer with the stamped text on it, and turned the opacity right down so you can still see both layers clearly. I did this because it was me "painting" over it, but even with me doing that its still there. I then made all the layers black and white because I felt it looked better than being in colour, and I added the band name. For the name, I picked a simple font and made it just an outline.
I have mixed feelings on this piece. I think I like it, and I think it all works, but I'm not sure if I could've done better.
IMAGE ELEVEN:
This design was honestly just an excuse for me to use one of my favourite photos of me. Someone took the photo of me, and I can't remember who, and its of me taking down notes and writing ideas in my notebook, while sat at the water. I didn't have to change much of the image since it was printed out, it had a nice texture to it. I just tweaked it a bit to add more depth, and bring out the blues just that little bit more, For the band name, I struggled with placement for awhile because I wanted to create balance with the piece, but didn't know how to do it. So, I ended up adding the band name in the top right corner, in a square shape. The lettering actually took a while to do. I made it by putting each letter into its own layer, and overlapping them to make sure they were all the same size and width. Then I moved them to the top right corner, and positioned them so that they would all be inline and kept as even as possible.
I do like this piece, but I don't know how well it fits with the theme I was going for. I think it's nice, and all the elements work well together, but I feel like it doesn't fit with the rest of the designs.
IMAGE TWELVE:
For this design I used another reference photo where yours truly was in it. I decided I wasn't happy with my face, so I just cut it out and didn't use it. I then created a new layer behind it, and just scribbled loads of colours, then used the glitch effect until I got what I was wanting. I then went back to the layer with the original image and tweaked it just a tad. I changed the contrast, saturation and colours just so that the warm colours would stand out more and be more bright. I then added a a slight perspective blur, so that the flowers on my chest and the glitch effect that was now my face would be the main focal point. I then added the slightest colour offset to the original image so that it would fit with the glitch effect on the other layer. For the font, I didn't want it to be over powering and distract from the rest of the image. So, I chose a nice, soft edged, font and only used the outline so that it wasn't used and distracting.
I do actually like how this design turned out, and I think every element really works well with each other.
IMAGE THIRTEEN:
For this design I decided I would use the reference photo where me and my sister were pretending to take a band photo. I figured it was fitting since it was for an album sleeve. For this design I decided to do all the stereotypical things you would see on an alternative rock band; the black bar across the eyes. the poor angle, the power pose, the large band name written right across it, and the highly edited photo. I wanted it to look as much like a standard album cover you would see as much as possible. So I took inspiration from several bands albums such as: Cleopatrick; The All American Rejects; Dinosaur Pile-Up; Paramore, and a few others.
I created this piece by cutting the background out of the main image, then editing the photo so that the colours would be more harsh, and the blue tones would be more pronounced. I then added yet another floral design into the background, and edited it a bit so it would compliment the other layer. I then put a black bar across mine and my sisters eyes. And finally, I added the band name huge, in white, across the bottom to make it eye-catching and noticeable.
I'm really happy with how this turned out because I was just having fun with it and it actually ended up looking great.
With these pieces, I decided to do them digitally. This was so that if there were any mistakes, or changes I wanted to make, it would be easier for me to edit the pieces.
